Lowell Rd. (north side of the road, just east of Alvernon); Tucson, AZ 85712. Light refreshments will be available and drawings for door prizes will take place periodically throughout the day. The new state-of-the-art Pignatelli Assistive Listening Media Center will be dedicated at 1:00 pm (with Dyan and Jim Pignatelli in attendance). Staff and Board members will be there to offer tours of the facility and information regarding ALOHA services. Vendors and hearing professionals will be available to demon-strate hearing devises and to answer questions or provide information on various issues (looping, cochlear implants, what to expect and not expect from hearing aids, how new technology can help, etc.). The center was made available through a grant from Jim and Dyan Pignatelli, and is a state-of-the-art inter-active media system that uses HDTV (TV) displaying Closed Captioning (CC) and a wireless "Intelligent" control panel. By pressing dedicated switches we can select and demonstrate the various devices we have available for display. These include an Inductive Loop (room loop) and a number of wireless UHF, FM and Infra Red devices with interfaces to a CD/DVD player/recorder and a telephone. As a result of family hear-ing concerns, Dyan and Jim have been very generous to both ALOHA and the University of Arizona with donations for projects in this area. Jim retired as Chairman, President, and CEO of Unisource and T.E.P. The mission of ALOHA has been to establish a support system for individuals with acquired deafness and/or hearing loss and their families, ensuring their participation in the mainstream of life. Services include, but are not limited to, peer support groups, speech reading classes, sign language classes and individualized computer training. Recent census data indicate that 500,000 Arizonans, and one-in-three seniors, are deaf or hard of hearing. Hearing loss is the third most prevalent health problem reported by individuals over age 65 and the number one most common disability shared by veterans returning from the Iraq/Afghanistan conflicts.
